SILCHAR, July 19: In a major development today, a colonel from 11 Field Regiment Army (Red Shield Division) went to visit Kumacherra village in Harinagar area under Lakhipur Police Station inhabited by the Dimasas, where for the past few days, large scale atrocities, killing and arson by Naga militants lashed the innocent villager. Currently, 70-75 Dimasa people in Kumacherra village are on hunger strike. Our sources said the Dimasas are staging fast in Kumacherra because they want immediate compensation from the government–– to reinstate law and order in the area and to take legal action against the Naga outfits carrying out violence there. The Dimasa villagers also demanded implementation of the Indira Awas Yojna for them as the recent violence have rendered many among them homeless. The Dimasas have threatened to intensify their agitation if their demands remain unfulfilled.
Our sources also said that SDO Madhumita Chowdhury and Circle officer Ruthlingthang of Lakhipur visited the troubled areas on July 15 and distributed relief among the victims.
However Cachar DC Gautam Ganguly today held a meeting with the police and military personnel and asked them to maintain constant vigil in Harinagar area where disturbance broke out between the communities. Our sources further said a medical camp has been organized there and 243 Dimasa villagers are currently undergoing free medical check up in the camp. (Source - The Sentinel)
