SILCHAR, May 27: Saugata Dey of Holy Cross School was the lone name from Barak Valley in the merit list of this year's HSLC examination. Saugata, who scored 459 marks, however could not figure in the top ten list as he finished 14th. In 2010, altogether 15 students from Barak Valley starred in the merit list. From Silchar town itself, 11 were in the merit list. Remaining four were from Karimganj.
But this year the overall result of Barak Valley was unsatisfactory. Last year, Collegiate School did a surprising result bagging six positionsin the merit list. But this year none from this school could make it in the first 20. However, all 135 students of the school passed out successfully, out of which 92 were in 1st division and remaining 43 were in 2nd division.
Saugata's Holy Cross also did a commendable performance as 80 out of 82 students came out with flying colours, out of which 77 were in 1st division. But overall result of Cachar district was not at all satisfactory as 8,729 out of total 13,395 students could pass the examination. Only 767 were in 1st division, 2,212 were in 2nd and remaining 5,750 were in 3rd division.
Karimganj's picture was worse. 53.40 per cent of total 6,874 students passedthe examination with only 309 in 1st division, 891 in 2nd and 2,471 in 3rd division. Jasimuddin of Bhanga HigherSecondary School scored highest marks in Urdu. He scored 83 per cent.
In Hailakandi, the result was better in comparison to last year. Total 4,356 students appeared this year and out of them 2,464 came out successfully. Percentage of pass was 56.57 per cent.207 figured in the 1st division list, 637 in 2nd and 1,620 in 3rd division.
Abu Mohammad Sufian Choudhury of Adarsha Vidya Niketan of Hailakandi town scored 92 per cent in Bengali which was the highest in the State. (SentinelAssam)
