Barak River stretch to be national waterway

NEW DELHI, Jan 10: Aiming at unified development of waterways for shipping, navigation and transportation of cargo tothe northeastern region, the government on Thursday said it would bring a bill in parliament to declare the Lakhipur-Bhanga stretch (121 km) of the Barak River a national waterway. The move would particularly benefit Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripuraand Arunachal Pradesh. "The union cabinet has approved the introduction of a bill in parliament for declaring Lakhipur-Bhanga stretch (121 km) of the Barak River a national waterway," Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters.
