Young Eco-Warrior Licypriya Kangujam Recognized as International Eco-Hero for Pioneering Efforts Against Plastic Pollution

At just 12 years old, Licypriya Kangujam has become a significant player in the global battle against plastic pollution. Recently, her dedication and inventive initiatives were acknowledged as she secured second place in the esteemed International Young Eco-Hero Awards, which honors the exceptional environmental contributions of young individuals aged 8 to 16.

Motivated by a strong sense of urgency to combat this critical global issue, Licypriya has introduced the groundbreaking "Plastic Money Shop"—a mobile, solar-powered marketplace where people can exchange single-use plastics for essential goods like rice, school supplies, and plant saplings. The collected plastic waste is then creatively repurposed into eco-friendly products, such as durable school benches, effectively minimizing waste while promoting sustainable practices. Licypriya is passionate about her mission, stating that "plastic pollution has become the new normal," and she is determined to change this alarming trend.

Born on October 2, 2011, in Bashikhong, Manipur, India, Licypriya is the eldest daughter of Kanarjit Kangujam and Bidyarani Devi Kangujam Ongbi and belongs to the Meitei ethnic community.

Licypriya began her advocacy for climate action and disaster risk reduction at the age of 7 after attending a UN disaster conference in Mongolia with her father. This experience prompted her to launch the "Child Movement," aimed at raising awareness about climate change and natural disasters.

In 2018, she donated her savings of 100,000 rupees to assist child victims of the catastrophic Kerala floods. Licypriya has spoken at prestigious events, including the UNESCO Partners' Forum in Angola, the 2019 UN Climate Change Conference (COP25) in Madrid, and the World Economic Forum in 2020.

She continues to campaign for climate action in India, urging the government to implement new laws to reduce pollution and make climate education mandatory in schools. Her activism has been recognized with awards such as the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Children Award, the World Children's Peace Prize, and the Global Child Prodigy Award.
