WMC Reaffirms Commitment to Manipur's Unity and Integrity Amid Ongoing Crisis

Lakhipuronline Digital Desk 12th Oct 2024: The World Meetei Council (WMC) has issued a resolute statement emphasizing its dedication to the unity and integrity of Manipur, firmly opposing any attempts to fragment the state along ethnic lines. In light of the ongoing unrest, the WMC has reiterated its stance against any demands for separate administration that threaten to undermine the state's historical and cultural cohesion.

In a press release, WMC Secretary Roshan Khumukcham declared that any efforts to divide Manipur will not be tolerated, asserting that the state's unity is of utmost importance. The council recognizes the Meetei community's constitutional right to seek Scheduled Tribe (ST) status under Article 342 of the Indian Constitution but stresses the need for peace and harmony during these turbulent times.

The WMC has urged the Government of India to prioritize resolving the crisis in Manipur, framing it as a national security concern due to the state's proximity to international borders. The council has called for immediate government intervention to ensure the safety and stability of the region, which is crucial for India's national interests.

Addressing the humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict, the WMC has emphasized the need for the resettlement of displaced individuals and adequate compensation for their losses. They also highlighted the urgent requirement for securing National Highways 37 and 29, which have been affected by unlawful taxes imposed by militant groups, posing significant security risks.

Additionally, the WMC has advocated for reducing flight fares between Imphal and other Indian cities to make air travel more accessible. They have also requested the resumption of railway services connecting Agartala, Silchar, and Jiribam, as well as extending the train service from Jiribam to Guwahati to improve transportation options for residents.

The WMC remains committed to protecting the rights of the Meetei people while fostering a spirit of peace and unity across Manipur. The organization stands in solidarity with all communities in the state and calls for a collaborative approach to resolving the current challenges faced by the region.
