5th anniversary of MDC celebrated

SILCHAR, Jan 28: The 5th anniversary of the formation of Manipuri Development Council (MDC) was celebrated on Wednesday at Chandpur Amuthoi Sangeet Vidyalaya, Sonai, 15 km from here. The open session was presided over by Ng Niranjan Singha, president of the organizing committee and also the president of United Manipuri Association, Assam (UMAA).
Jiten Singha presented the report of the developmental activities of the Council granted by the Government of Assam during his tenure. Sabitri Devi also gave an account of the achievements of the Council and its commitment to work in the overall interests of the Manipuri community. It has been brought on record to recall that the Council was formed at the dynamic initiative of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi 5 year ago. But, it could be achieved after a long sustaining struggle which spread over 20 years.
The movement for the Council was spearheaded by UMAA under the able leadership of Jiten Singha along with other state level organizations of Manipuri community. The entire Manipuri community which includes Meiteis and Meitei Muslims come under the same umbrella of Manipuri Development Council. All have the opportunity to get the benefits of the Council devoted to the all round progress and development of the community.
The open session was attended by around 3,000 representatives from various district, division and village level committees of UMAA.
Besides, 500 handloom committees of the community in Assam along with representatives of other leading Manipuri associations of the state graced the anniversary celebration. At the outset, Kh Nabakanta Singha, president, Sonai division committee of UMAA, welcomed the invitees and guests. Key-note address was delivered by S Manitomba Singha, secretary of UMAA. Delegates representing various committees also spoke on the occasion and took pledge to maintain unity and solidarity, besides reposing their faith and confidence in the leadership of Jiten Singha.
