The World Meetei Council (WMC) has issued a fervent appeal to Hon’ble Shri N Biren Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur, to recognize the critical role he plays in safeguarding the destiny of the Meetei people. With their population confined to a mere 5 to 6 percent of Manipur’s total area, the Meetei community has experienced a significant demographic shift over the past few decades.
According to the 2011 census, the Meetei, who once constituted 60 percent of Manipur’s population in 1971, now account for only around 44 percent. This decline can be attributed to the rapid growth of migrant populations, which has propelled the Naga indigenous community to the second-largest population in the state. The influx of these illegal migrants shows no signs of abating.
Compounding these concerns is the upcoming delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Manipur, scheduled for 2026. Delimitation entails an increase in the number of seats proportional to population growth. This poses a significant threat to the Meetei community, as their identity may be further eroded in the next two to three decades.
In light of these circumstances, it is imperative that the Meetei people rally together to secure their identity by seeking constitutional protection under the Scheduled Tribe provision. The WMC has conducted extensive research, which unequivocally demonstrates the Meetei’s fulfillment of all the criteria for ST status as per the existing laws.
Time is of the essence, as the delimitation process is fast approaching in 2026. Should the Meetei’s claim be overlooked during delimitation, their identity will become increasingly vulnerable, and the integrity of Manipur would face a grave challenge.
In view of this urgent situation, the WMC implores Hon’ble Shri N Biren Singh to promptly submit two essential reports to the central government: (1) Meetei’s ethnography and (2) Meetei’s latest socio-economic data, before the upcoming parliamentary elections.
