SILCHAR, Sept 15: While reviewing the progress so far made in the implementation of various schemes under Sarba Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) for 2009-10 and 2010-11 in Cachar by officials concerned on Tuesday here, it was revealed that against the target of 5,980 disabled children identified, 4,369 of them have been enlisted for education in different areas of the district. For others, arrangements have been made for their education at home. It also came to light that in Lakhipur and Silchar, 54 Jyoti kendras are functioning. Of the 800 students admitted in these centres, 290 of them have been regular in attending their classes.
It was decided to open three new Jyoti kendras would be set up for the benefit of students. The Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Harendra Kumar Dev Mahanta, who chaired the review meeting, said those involved in the implementation of the SSA project should ensure that no child was engaged in menial works either at homes or in shops. Any person violating the specific legal provisions in this regard could be prosecuted and fined up to Rs 10,000.
Of high appreciation came schools at Tundurkandi in Sonai and Khasia punji in Udharband for better management of the schools and for maintaining proper academic atmosphere under education guarantee scheme. The Deputy Commissioner advised the official concerned to reward the teachers associated with the two schools in recognition of their dedicated services.
Within the purview of monitoring came the construction of school buildings, additional class rooms, toilets and kitchens and their repairment. For the opening of 14 schools in forest areas and allotment of lands for them, it was decided that the Forest Department would be moved to obtain its no objection certificate soon. Besides, in order to increase the efficiency of teachers, oriental courses for teachers at the national and regional-levels could be arranged.
At this review meeting were present ADC MH Laskar, officer In-charge of SSA and Inspector of Schools Fulendra Kalita, Deputy Regional Director of Information and Public Relations Haran Dey as well as BDOs and officials concerned. (The Sentinel)
