SILCHAR, July 29: The campaigning for the Silchar Municipality election, scheduled on July 31, came to an end this evening. Braving the inclement weather, about 124 candidates today gave finishing touches to their extensive campaigning. About 1.24 lakh voters will decide the fate of the candidates on Friday.
The results will be declared on August 4. Sources further said, incessant rain since yesterday night has failed to dampen the spirit of the candidates and their followers as they were seen roaming around the nook and corner of their wards since early morning.
Meanwhile, the Cachar district administration, in the backdrop of alleged large-scale anomalies in the recent voter lists, declared that the Lok Sabha voter list would be followed in the civic body poll.
People of Baroghari area of Rongpur under Ward No. 5 alleged that names of at least 2,500 voters who exercised their democratic rights in the general elections four months back were surprised to notice their names missing from the new voter list.
Silchar MP Kabindra Purkayastha, former Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev, Urban Development Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala, Silchar MLAs Bithika Dev, Rumi Nath, Parimal Shuklabadya are working hard to ensure victory for their respective party candidates.
Meanwhile, State Excise Minister Gautam Roy, who has reportedly made it a habit to criticize Dev at every opportunity, surprised the Silchar Congress by campaigning for party candidate Gaurab Paul in Ward No. 23.
Meanwhile, the district administration has declared ‘dry day’ from today till July 31 and again on August 4 in Silchar and Lakhipur.
