SILCHAR, March 5: Though Lakhipur became an Assembly segment in 1952 and upgraded as subdivision in 1992, but till date no appreciable development has taken place in the area where more than 60 per cent of population continue to struggle for sustenance and survival. Most of the State departments are housed on rented premises. In the name of development, ruling party minister and his minions are playing dirty politics without caring for the socioeconomic uplift of masses. Among all the subdivisions in Barak Valley, Lakhipur remains far backward. The Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Urban Development and Housing Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala who has been representing the subdivision for the last three decades have only fed the people with promises without implementation on the ground.
Bijay Bahadur Singh, president of Lakhipur AGP unit, articulating the grievances of people at a press meet today, said 85 per cent of them live below poverty line and it is most paradoxical that despite huge funds and packages there has been no improvement in their way of living. Under Gogoi regime, it is open loot of development funds, he alleged. He claimed that for the last five years, AGP with its limited resources has been working for the welfare of common people and to realize their legitimate demands for better living.
Nijam Uddin Barbhuiya, secretary, spoke about the various agitation programmes launched by his party which included staging dharna before block and sub-divisional offices, besides protest demonstration, rallies and torch light processions from time to time to hammer the grievances and their resolutions.
Dhaneshwari Devi, Women Cell, posed certain specific questions before the Urban Development and Housing Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala to unfold before the masses an account of the works done by him for the development of Lakhipur subdivision and a fact sheet on implementation of projects and schemes for the welfare of poor and BPL families. She also wanted to know why is the agriculture office at Banskandi has remained closed for the last nine years? She asserted that AGP alone would work in the interest of all sections of people of the subdivision and sought support for her party at the Assembly elections. Others present at the press meet included Dijomani Singh, candidate for the Assembly seat, and Fima Hmar, Executive Member, as well as other office-bearers. (SentinelAssam)
