Dr Ravi Kannan honoured with Karmayogi award

SILCHAR, June 26: Dr Ravi Kannan, eminent oncologist and Director of Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, was honoured with Karmayogiaward on Saturday evening by Lions Club Central Silchar at a simple and solemn function. It was on March 12, in fact, that he was felicitated at the Jorhat Lions District Conference and bestowed with the rare honour, with a citation and a cheque of Rs 51,000 which was donated by him for the welfare of Cancer Hospital here.
The function here was organized to share the information with mediapersons on the premises of Lions Club in which were present Amar Khandelwal, president, Arindam Bhattacharya, secretary, Dilip Chakraborty, PRO, among others. Since 2001, Lions Club has been honouring eminent personalities engaged in social works for the betterment of society and people as a whole. Among those who have been honoured earlier included Harsha Bhattacharya, well known eye specialist, Dr Kumar Kanti Das, prominent surgeon. Besides personalities from the medical profession, artistes and social activists have also been felicitated and honoured with the prestigious award.
Dr Ravi Kannan, who was the Director of Chennai Cancer Institute, after joining Cachar Cancer Hospital Society,has made it his mission and vision to provide best of medical attention to the cancer patients of this region. He said in reply to the felicitation that he not only felt proud and inspired but also made him more resolute to serve the poor and needy cancer affected people of not only Assam but of the entire Northeast with minimum affordable cost. He pointed out 80 per cent of the patients admitted here come from economically backward communities for whom the hospital management in principle is committed to treat them in the best possible manner without any professional interest.
Dr Kannan speaking about his future plan said that his mission was to makeCachar Cancer Hospital one of the best treatment centres in the Northeast. For which, the plan was on foot to expand the hospital building, increaseman power by inducting more specialists, nurses and technicians. It was also his vision to develop a state of art critical care centre. Install medical equipments like mammogram, linear accelerator, MRI, brachytherapy unit, blood bank instruments, besides intensifying awareness campaign across the valleyand beyond.
