SILCHAR, Jan 17: The residents of Lambabasti and Kajirgram, near Banskandie area of Lakhipur subdivision, are going through a lot of hardships as the local plant of water supply scheme has not been functioning for the past one year and two months. The aggrieved citizens have been left with no other alternative but to use water from ponds and ring wells of the area for daily usage including drinking and cooking purposes.
It should be mentioned here that the water procured from the local ponds and ring wells is unclean and an outbreak of diseases among the residents may happen any moment. The public expressed their anguish over the PHE officials in this regard. The locals alleged that in spite of several repeated reminders to SDO (PHE), no action has been taken in this regard by the authorities concerned. They further alleged that the department officials told them that an estimated amount of Rs.2 lakh is needed for the repair of the plant, but as the department concerned does not have the required funds so the locals should collect the amount for the purpose.
The aggrieved villagers, numbering around 100, led by Babli Begum Barbhuiya, Banskandie GP president, and Abdul Aziz Choudhury, ex-servicemen, met Rajdeep Goala, MLA Lakhipur, on January 10 in this regard. The MLA said he would be able to give the required fund for the plant if money for any of the welfare schemes for his constituency is released before January 31. If it does not happen then he would speak with Sushmita Dev, MP Silchar, and urge upon her to release the amount needed for the purpose from her MPLAD funds. He further directed the GP concerned to sanction the amount from the GP fund and complete the repair works on a priority basis. (Source: SentinelAssam)
