SILCHAR, Sept 13: Nikhil Cachar Haidimba Barman Samiti, an umbrella organization of the Dimasas of Barak Valley, today staged demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner and through him submitted a memorandum addressed to the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, reiterating for early settlement of Dimaraji issue in view of the deadline of October 2, 2010 by Dima Halam Daogah (DHD) which has threatened to return to jungle in the event of the impasse continuing. Hundreds of members and supporters of various Dimasa organizations with banners, posters and placards highlighting their demand besides raising slogans cautioned the Centre and the State on their callous attitude towards the burning issue and sent the signal of their support to the move of DHD.
The Samiti reminded that the ceasefire agreement signed by the DHD with the Government of India in 2003 started the peace process, ending violence, in order to pave way for settlement. But it regretted to say that the Centre has preferred to adopt dilly-dally strategy which has made solution difficult. The Samiti at the same time expressed its concern at the deadline given by DHD which might endanger the peace process and violence again take the centre stage disturbing peace and tranquility of the district. It will also have adverse impact on the ongoing peace talks with various other outfits of Northeast as they may lose their faith in dialogue.
The Samiti has impressed upon the Union Home Minister to intervene in the issue in order to evolve an acceptable solution in the best interest of the welfare of Dimasa people and other communities as well as the entire region. All Dimasa Students’ Union (ADSU) in a separate memorandum pointed out that demand for Dimaraji was on their land which was earlier known as Hidimba Kingdom or Kachari Kingdom.
The demand was also supported by the Merger Committee (MC) as well as Gorkha Paribar Kalyan Samiti (GPKS). The MC said that the demand was for merger of the Dimasa populated areas and villages of Cachar district with Dima Hasao district against the backdrop of history, culture and traditions. GPKS extending its support for the Dimaraji, cited reciprocal gesture from their Dimasa brethren for Gorkhaland. The demonstrators were addressed among others by Subhankar Barman, president, Animesh Barman, general secretary of ADSU, Sanjay Barman, joint secretary Nikhil Cachar Haidimba Barman Samiti and Dhiraj Kanti Barman.
