SILCHAR, Aug 7: The relatively calm Karimganj, the border district headquarters in Barak Valley, is hotting up with pent up grievances of people against the administrative heads, Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police for their alleged dictatorial attitude and whimsical style of functioning. Five-party alliance of CPI, CPM, AIUDF, BJP and SP has at a joint public meeting in the heart of this town on Thursday decided to launch agitation from September 5, demanding removal of both the supremos of district administration, citing specific instance of how at their instigation the peaceful picketers and protesters including women, old and young, were roughed up by police on the day of nationwide bandh in protest against abnormal hike in petroleum products. It was equated with Hitlerian brutality.
Speakers who addressed the largely attended gathering of workers and supporters from far and near included AGP leader Najrul Islam Choudhury, Ataur Rahman Majarbhuiya, AIUDF MLA, CPI Chandan Chakraborty, CPM Nirmal Dey and SP Jyotish Purkayastha. All of them without much variance highlighted the bandh day torture and focused on the callous attitude of the district administration to take effective steps for easing power crisis, repair and reinforcement of breached embankments, adequate relief to the victims of natural calamities and improvement of NHs 44 and 151 and withdrawal of fabricated cases against political leaders and others on non bailable arrest warrants.
The leaders said that since the joining of the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police, law and order has deteriorated, development stalled and democratic rights throttled. The agitation is to bring into focus the immediate need to end terror-raj and restore the rule of law as well as democratic values. They cautioned if the duo high officials were not removed by September 5, the alliance would intensify its agitation through plan of action.
Ataur Rahman Majarbhuiya was more harsh in his tirade when he said both the DC and the SP have lost the faith and confidence of people and cautioned them not to play with the sentiments and feelings of people. People, he added to say, would be compelled to take to the streets and at the same time get their legitimate democratic right to protest for the redressal of their grievances. (SENTINELASSAM)
