SILCHAR, Jan 5: Ngursunthang Hmar, former Chairman of Barak Valley Hill Tribes Development Council expired today at around 8.30 am. He suffered cardiac attack while he was being taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. He continued to be a member of the Council. Hewas the Chairman of the Council for 12 years from 1999-2011. He was also one of the founder member of the Council who worked with all sincerity and dedication for the welfare of all the hill tribes living in Barak Valley.
All Assam Tribal Sangha, Cachar district unit, deeply mourned the sudden demise of Ngursunthang Hmar and recalled his various contributions towards thestrengthening of tribal unity and harmony. GalimGangmei, Secretary, All Assam Tribal Sangha, described him as a leader of the tribals who was vibrant and dynamic. He said Ngursunthang Hmar had a vision to envisage tribal communities as a composite body striving for the socio-economic development and at the same time safeguarding their culture and identity. The meeting prayed for eternal peace to his soul and extended its sympathy to the membersof the bereaved family. Hmar Students' Association of Barak Valley, Assam, too condoled his death and the President of the Association, L T Hmar, in his statement said the death of Ngursunthang Hmar "has dealt a serious blow to the cause of the tribal communities of thisvalley."
