SILCHAR, Dec 20: “In tune with the changing times, education system has also to change in order to meet the aspirations of academicians, teachers and students in the context of globalization”, observed Dr Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, at the inaugural function to herald the golden jubilee celebrations of premier Cachar College here today.
Addressing the assembly of teachers, students and distinguished invitees on the occasion, Dr Bhattacharjee recalled his association with the college both as a student and teacher and said it should be the holistic approach of every teacher to become role-model before students in order to inspire them and make them perfect human beings to serve the society around.
A teacher has to face the interrogative truth unfolding before him and realize that teaching is not only to make students qualify for degrees and diplomas, but to equip them with knowledge and qualities for better placements and for greater role to play in the wide arena of this electronic era. It is essential as he said “the mental attitude and thought process of a teacher has also to be positive with the vision of being responsible and responsive in competitive situations. Besides being committed to their noble profession, teachers have also to develop a cordial and friendly relations with their taught and to work towards achieving the goal of making this institution a centre of excellence. He made it clear that he was speaking to them not as Vice-Chancellor but as a teacher in order to communicate with them in a better way. As a Vice-Chancellor, he spoke of his contemplated plan to bring six urban colleges including Cachar College and two rural colleges under the specific development scheme of the University to build up better infrastructure for quality education.

Dr Debashish Kar, Principal of the college, describing the occasion a historic one said that it was an opportunity to pay homage to those luminaries and visionaries who dreamt of this centre of education and contributed towards it making. He added to say during the last 50 years, the college has made rapid stride in imparting higher education. It has at present 17 departments of Science, Arts and Commerce besides two open universities courses as well as UGC sponsored programmes. A state of the art computer laboratory, enriched Science departments, better infrastructure for Arts and Commerce.
Dr Aparajita Choudhury, president of the governing body of the college, said there are two aspects of this celebration- one to recollect with all respect the contributions of all those who did their best to set up this college and the second it leaves a message for posterity to see that the centre of education reaches still new heights of academic achievements. At the Dr Apurva Chakraborty, organizing secretary, welcomed the distinguished assembly.The three-day celebration, according to the organizing secretary, will showcase a host of events involving teachers students, ex-employees, alumni, guardians and society at large. Among the programmes enlisted are inter-college debate competition, down memory lane, golden jubilee lecture to be delivered by noted environmentalist Prof Pranabes Sanyal, Rabindra Nath Tagore and his observance of 150th birth anniversary and on December 23 students of the college will present Indian Idol Amit Paul.
