SILCHAR, Jan 8: The members of All Assam Manipuri Students’ Union (AAMSU) have urged the higher authorities concerned to conduct a reexamination of the test conducted on January 5 for the selection of lower division junior assistants in lower primary and higher secondary schools of the state, particularly in bi-lingual schools of Barak Valley which have Manipuri as a MIL subject. It was informed to media-persons in a press-briefing held in their office premises at Rongpur area of the town recently.
Seram Herajit Singh, president of AAMSU, said that as per the notification released on December 20, by the Education Department, Dispur, the medium of the test for paragraph writing section was only in Bengali, and Assamese languages. The union urged upon the higher authorities concerned that the section should also be in Manipuri as there are many schools in the region where Manipuri is taught as a subject. They also met S Viswanathan, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, and the officials of the Ministry of State Education in this regard.
But, none of the authorities concerned paid heed to their request. The members were left with no other alternative but to stage peaceful protest demonstrations in front of the 4 examination centres out of 12 examination centres of the district. But, the three members of the Union were detained under prohibitive detention by the police personnel in a total disregard to their democratic rights. They were kept in police lock up for the entire night and released the next morning, Seram Herajit Singh added to say.
Babu Singh, advisor to AAMSU, said that Manipuri is a recognized language and is taught in academic establishments right from primary to higher academic institutions in the state. A large number of Manipuri subject teachers’ posts are lying vacant in this valley. The education department should provide Manipuri as another language for filling up the posts of lower division junior assistants’ examination particularly for the schools of the valley. The total number of schools teaching Manipuri as a subject includes 27 high schools, 65 Middle English and 127 lower primary schools. Babu Singh added to say that the government should conduct new recruitment for the qualified candidates from the community to fill up the vacant posts.
Babu Singh further added, though the education department has assured them that it will look into the issue, but the students’ body wants it to be sorted out on a priority basis. F Loknath Singh, vice president, Y Prabin Kumar Singh, general secretary, Sanathoi Devi and A Lily Devi said that they are not against any community or linguistic group, but they want their rights to be recognized. The members also criticized and condemned the police for their undemocratic and dictatorial actions against the peaceful agitators. (Source: SentinelAssam)
