Lakhipuronline Digital Desk : Maibam Nartina Devi, an exceptional weightlifter from Manipur, brought glory to India at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Doha, Qatar, on December 25, 2024. Competing in the junior 87+ kg category, Martina clinched two silver medals and one bronze, adding to her impressive list of achievements in the sport.
A Grueling Competition
Martina began her campaign by lifting 96 kg in the snatch, which secured her a bronze medal. Despite not reaching her personal best of 237 kg, she managed a total lift of 225 kg, earning a silver medal in the overall standings. Her performance in the clean and jerk stood out, where she lifted 129 kg to claim another silver. A final attempt to lift 136 kg in the clean and jerk was unfortunately unsuccessful, as Martina sustained a minor knee injury during the effort.
India’s Medal Tally at the Championships
Martina’s contributions marked a strong finish for India in the junior competition, bringing the total medal count to 12, comprising 8 silver and 4 bronze medals. Earlier, Parv Chaudhary added to the youth competition’s tally with two bronze medals in the 96 kg category, lifting a total of 303 kg (135 kg in snatch and 168 kg in clean and jerk).
India showcased remarkable strength in the youth section, securing a total of 21 medals: 7 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze. This success underscores the rising talent in Indian weightlifting and reflects the efforts of young athletes like Martina Devi Maibam.
