SILCHAR, Oct 30: All Assam Manipuri Students’ Union, All Assam Manipuri Women Meirapaibi Coordination Committee, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad and Manipuri Diaspora Assam have in a joint statement denied any nexus of the NGOs with militancy as reported in the dailies published from here on October 23. The leaders of these organizations have described the report as baseless and without any substance. Presence of the telephone numbers in the contact list of militants, they pointed out, could not be construed as an evidence of nexus. They have also taken exception to the contents that members of NGOs have lured the Manipuri youths to enroll themselves with the militant outfits who allegedly collected money from Cachar district.
The NGO leaders who included among others L Surendra Singha, president of AAMSU stated that the linguistic minority community of Manipuris have always been in favour of maintaining peace and tranquility, besides communal harmony with their involvement in welfare programmes. A memorandum has been sent to the Chief Minister of Assam with the request that he should personally look into the unfortunate incident in the interest of peace and harmony. (The Sentinel)
