SILCHAR, June16: The nomination papers of three candidates for the Municipality Election in Silchar that is scheduled for July 31 have been rejected. Around 130 candidates have submitted nominations for the post from 28 wards in the town.
After investigating the nomination papers on Wednesday, scrutineers cancelled the applications of three candidates, declaring them to be unfit for contesting the civic polls. It is mentionable that the three rejected contestants are independent candidates. The rejected candidates are Shibayan Kumar Das from ward 11, Najmin Akhtar Chowdhury from ward 16 and Jiya Uddin Ahmed from ward 17 of the town. Due to Wednesday’s rejection of three nomination papers by the scrutineers, so far 127 nominations papers have been declared valid by the election commission for the ensuing municipality elections in Silchar.
The nomination papers for the Karimganj Municipal elections scheduled of July 31 were also scrutinised on Wednesday. According to official sources, out of 87 nominations submitted only one was rejected. The rejected applicant is Devaprashad Chakraborty, an independent candidate from ward 5 of Karimganj Town. In Karimganj, the BJP has submitted 27 nominations, Congress 24 and Independent candidates have submitted 36 nominations this time around. A total of 106 nomination papers were filed in Hailakandi and 43 for the Lala Town Committee elections. In Hailakandi, the application papers of Jamupau Kabui, an independent candidate, was rejected on Wednesday. (Source – The Sentinel)
