SILCHAR, Jan 22: Residents of Lakhipur Road on the eastern side of this town today blocked the busy road connectivity from the central point of the commercial area of Gopalganj to Madhurband which terminates at Badrighat along river Barak, covering an a distance of around five km. This road passes through the commercial hub of the main market and business centre of this town known as Fatak Bazar. It is the centre not only of various commercial commodities but also of vegetables. People of the area held up movement of all sorts of traffic in protest against its deplorable condition. Mujibur Rahman articulating the grievances of people said that three years ago, Sontosh Mohan Dev, then Union Minister, laid the foundation stone of this stretch of road for its improvement at an estimated outlay of rupees three crore sanctioned under central road fund. A signboard was also put up at the starting point of this road near Meghna Bastralaya, detailing the length of road and the estimated expenditure. But no improvement work was taken up by the PWD (R). The condition is such thatit has become difficult for people to commute and vehicles to ply. Mujibur Rahman said four days ago, they met Dinesh Prasad Goala, Minister, who assured them that the work would begin from January 20, but nothing happened. He revealed that from Monday, the road would be blocked indefinitely. (SENTINELASSAM)
