Silchar-Lumding Broad Gauge movement committee decides line of action

SILCHAR, July 13: The first executive body meeting of the movement committee on Silchar-Lumding Broad Gauge construction was held at Bangabhavan, Sadarghat, in Silchar on Saturday. The meeting was presided over by Kiran Shankar Mahanta.

In the meeting, elected executive members from the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi were present. As the meeting commenced, Ajoy Roy explained the purpose of the meeting. In the mass convention of June 1, some proposals on the modus operandi of future movement were incorporated. According to the accepted proposal, the Barak Valley Demand Day was observed on July 1 as its first step. As the second step, a memorandum would be sent to Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on July 15.

The executive committee members of the meeting also welcomed the initiative of the Railway Minister for highlighting the Silchar-Lumding broad gauge project in the current rail Budget. It was decided in the meet that Mamata Banerjee would be invited in Barak Valley to see the importance and usefulness of Broad Gauge in the Valley. At the same time, it was also decided in the meeting to demand for the development of the law and order situation in the NC Hills; for adequate security arrangement in the area and submitting a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the Asom Governor, through the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar.

Additionally, the accepted proposal also contains month-long enterprise of building up mass demand committees in Barak Valley. On August 13, 17 and 19 to observe dharnas for two hours in front of the DC offices of Hailakandi, Silchar and Karimganj.

In the meeting it was decided to make the successive movements in Barak Valley stronger. A six-member sub committee was formed comprising executive members of the movement committee of Silchar, Karimganj and Hailakandi.

Prasun Kanti Dev, Churamoni Singha, Dinendra Narayan Biswas, Pradip Acharjya, Nirmalya Das, Sunil Roy, Shayma Prasad Nath, Alam Hussein Laskar, Pradip Kumar Dev, Subrata Chandra Nath, Tushar Das were also present in the meeting. (Source – The Sentinel)
