SILCHAR, Sept 5: "Teachers arethe main architect of building a great nation. They are the ideals and role models of the society in general and students in particular," said Debasish Chakraborty, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, while addressing the mammoth gathering of teachers and students during the day-long celebration of 51st Teachers' Day at district library auditorium here today.

He said that students always try to imitate their teachers intheir lives. "If they were enriched with proper education, the fate of the nation would always shine." He said only proper educationcould curb all the evils and destruction from which the country has been suffering. He requested the teachers' community as a whole to extend their help in resolving the various social problems ofthe country.

Satya Bushan Paul, professor of Chemistry, Assam University, Silchar, as well as ascientist, who graced the occasion as chief guest, laid emphasis on creating 'scientific bent of mind' among students from their initial stage so that they could explore many more things in the future. He at the same time said that teachers should provide the origin and history of every chapter that they taught the students which would create their more interest on the subject and subsequently their horizon of knowledge would also be broaden. He however expressed his disappointmenton the present education system as he said that he had witnessed instances where the graduates could not writean application correctly even in their mother tongues that indicates the presence of loopholes in our education system.

Bibash Ranjan Chowdhury, former teacher of Guru Charan College and a memberof Assam Public Service Commission, underlined the importance of character building of students by the teachers. "Our duty is to create a man not a machine," he added. Samar Kanti Roy Chowdhury, former principal of Nehru Higher Secondary School, Pailapool, said the "dedication" and "commitment" should be the main mantras of a teacher.

Sushmita Deb, MLA, Cachar, expressed her concern at the low teacher student ratio especially in the rural areas. She said that she was taken aback to know that there were so many schools in the districts that lack teachers. She, however, assured that the vacancies would be filled up soon.

As part of the day-long programme, a good number of songs and dances were performed, besides a total of 35 teachers of the district were felicitated for their remarkable contribution in the field of teaching and learning.
