Water level of Barak rising

SILCHAR, July 6: Though with the onset of monsoon, this Valley has been experiencing scarce rains and rising mercury level, the sudden spate in the river Barak during the last 48 hours has taken the people of the region by surprise. This is a phenomenon which is quite inexplicable to commoners. But, information shared by the Water Resource Department indicates heavy downpours in the catchment areas of Barak and its tributaries originating from the hills of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and the district of Dima Hasao.
The level of Barak at Annapurna Ghat of the town today at 1 pm, according to Water Resource Department, was 16.74 metre, 3.09 metre below the red mark of 19.83 metre. The water level continues to rise and the trend, as the forecast by the meteorological department says, will be on rise. During the coming week, starting from Monday, rainfall in the range of 2 to 6 mm has been forecast in the Valley. For today and tomorrow, Sunday, the rainfall will go up from 3 to 9 mm.
