Jiribam: Open Doubles Badminton Tournament Inaugurated as Part of AMSU Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

Jiribam, April 7 – In a vibrant display of sportsmanship and youth engagement, the Open Doubles Badminton Tournament kicked off today at the Multi Indoor Stadium in Mahei Khullen, Jiribam. The tournament is being jointly organized by the 38th Assam Rifles and the AMSU Unit of Jiri College to commemorate the 60th anniversary and Diamond Jubilee of the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) — one of the most prominent student organizations in the region.

🏛️ Grand Inaugural Ceremony

The opening ceremony of the two-day tournament was marked by the presence of distinguished dignitaries and community leaders. The event was graced by:

  • Col. Prashant Singh Chundawat, SC, Commanding Officer of the 38th Assam Rifles, Kadamtala, Jiribam, who attended as the Chief Guest.

  • Chinglemba Nameirakpam, President of the AMSU District Committee, Jiribam, who presided over the function.

  • Bhudhachandra Singh, noted social activist from Jiribam.

  • Kh. Janaki Devi, former member of the Jiribam Zila Parishad.

  • Moirangthem Mubi Singh (IPS), retired Superintendent of Police.

  • Dr. Thongam Somorendra Singh, Head of Department, Jiri College, Jiribam.

All guests of honour and dignitaries took their seats on the dais and expressed their appreciation for organizing such a meaningful event to promote youth development and celebrate AMSU’s legacy.

🏸 Tournament Action Begins

The sporting event began with high energy and enthusiastic participation from young players. Competitive matches were played right from the opening ceremony.

In the first match of the day, the pair Givson and Samananda displayed solid coordination and technique, defeating Kishan and Sempou with a convincing scoreline of 15-8, 15-7.

The second match witnessed a close contest between Sunder and Arshad against L. Mani and Goroba. Sunder and Arshad eventually clinched the match with scores of 15-13, 15-10.

Several other matches followed as the tournament progressed throughout the day, drawing crowds and energizing the atmosphere with cheers and excitement.

The day’s matches were conducted under the supervision of experienced umpires, ensuring fair play and adherence to game rules. The officiating team included:

  • Th. Homendra Singh

  • Y. Rohen Singh

  • N. Amarjit Singh

Their efforts contributed significantly to the smooth conduct of the tournament matches.

Speaking at the event, Meinam Rohit, General Secretary of the AMSU District Committee, Jiribam, emphasized the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and security forces like the Assam Rifles in promoting youth-centric activities. He highlighted that the tournament is a symbolic gesture of AMSU’s commitment to holistic student development, not just in education but also in physical and social spheres.

He expressed hope that this tournament would grow in scope and prestige, eventually becoming an annual tradition. He also appealed to the public to extend their support and encouragement towards AMSU's future events, community outreach programs, and student welfare initiatives.
